Bartók kórusművei alighanem életművének legkevésbé ismert rétegét alkotják. Ennek oka leginkább az lehet, hogy ezek a darabok igen erősen kötődnek a nyelvhez (magyar, román, szlovák népi szövegekhez), jószerivel fordíthatatlanok, fordításban alig énekelhetők – így még a Magyarországon (főleg pedagógiai céllal) gyakran énekelt gyermek- s női karok sem népszerűek a magyar nyelvterület határain kívül.

Kétségtelen az is, hogy a kompozíciók többsége igen nehéz, néha szinte megoldhatatlan feladatok elé állítja az előadókat. Pedig ezek a kompozíciók – csupán számukat tekintve is – fontos vonulatot képeznek szerzőjük munkásságában, művészi értéküket tekintve pedig egyáltalán nem maradnak el a reprezentatívnak tekintett művek mögött.
