A HIStory két lemezből áll. az első a History Begins egy válogatás, mely a korábban már megjelent legnagyobb slágereket tartalmazza. A második a History Continues című, mely teljesen új anyag. Az dalok témái a környezettudatosságról, az elszigeteltségről, a kapzsiságról, az öngyilkosságról, az igazságtalanságról, és Jackson konfliktusai a médiával - szólnak.
Az album dalai közül néhány vitára adott okot, így Jackson újraírta a dalszövegeket. A They Don't Care About Us című dalszövegei miatt antiszemitizmussal vádolták, valamint R. Kelly-t, mert plagiarizálta az album egyik dalát a You Are Not Alone címűt, melyet a belga rádió betiltott.
