Az együttes nevét egy XVIII. századi angol földművestől kapta. Jethro Tull mezőgazdasági reformokat vezetett be, megalkotta az első vetőgépet, és írt egy könyvet "Hogyan kell lovakat és nemesebb paripákat dresszírozni, s más tudnivalók az állattenyésztés és mezei gazdászat tudományából" címmel.
A zenekar egyik alapítója, énekes-fuvolás-gitárosa: Ian Anderson 1947. október 8-án született. A rock skót koboldja pályafutását a 63-ban alakult Blades-ben kezdte. Itt ismerkedett meg jó néhány későbbi zenésztársával. Néhány hasonló próbálkozás: The John Evan Band és a John Evan's Smash után 1967 novemberében hozta létre a ma is létező rockegyüttest. Eleinte főleg bluesos számokat játszottak, sok egyéni ötlettel fűszerezve a már bevált formákat. Nevük az angol rádióban gyakran hangzott el, a lemezlovasok szívesen játszották számaikat.
